Horseshoes – Building Your Own Pits

So you have played a few games of horseshoes and want a more authentic feeling? Tired of horseshoes bouncing all over the grass? Time to make some horseshoes pits!

You can always construct a professional horseshoe pit, but for the purpose of this article I am going to explain how to create a “backyard” pit. First thing you should do is drive the stakes into the ground. Each stake should be 40 feet apart from eachother. You also want to pick out relatively level playing ground for both sides. When you drive the stakes in the ground they should go in at an angle. You do not want to have stakes standing straight up in the air because ringers can bounce off of them easily. Also, from constant contact with the horseshoes, the stakes will begin to slant backwards which makes it extremely difficult to get a ringer. The angle of the stakes should be roughly 12 degrees (about three inches) pointing towards eachother. From a pitcher’s view, the stake should be slanted towards you when throwing.

The stakes are about 36 inches, and you want to drive them into the ground until about 14 inches remains above the earth. One thing that cannot be avoided during play is the slanting of the stakes. After enough horseshoes hit them then will begin to move around. The dirt surrounding the stakes will loosen up a bit and make the stake a little unstable. While other pit material (explained later) helps, the stakes will still become loose after enough play.

To combat the stakes moving around you can dig a hole where the pit is. Dig down about 8 inches. The hole does not have to be huge, but should be large enough to put a piece of 4×4 lumber in there. The piece of lumber should be about 8 to 10 inches long. Once you have the lumber placed in the hole, take a drill and drill a hole in the lumber at a 12 degree angle. The idea is to place the stake through this hole in the wood. Once the stake is through the hole, fill it up with dirt again until it is level with the ground. Now continue to drive the stake in the ground until 14 inches remain. When horseshoes hit the stake, the lumber in the ground will help the stability and prevent some movement.

Another great idea (if you are skilled enough to do so) is to weld a metal plate to the horseshoe at the 14 inch mark. Make sure to weld the plate to the stake at an angle as well. With the metal plate and the lumber in the ground, the stake will be able to take most backyard beatings. Just remember to keep the stakes aligned and pointed towards eachother when doing this. There is nothing worse than making these horseshoe pits and then realizing that the stakes are not aligned correctly.

Now that the stakes are firmly in the ground it is time to create the border that defines the horseshoe pits. Take 3 pieces of 4×4 lumber as this will be the border for one side. The backside of the pit should measure about 36 inches. Then cut the other two pieces of lumber to be about 48 to 60 inches. Drill holes in these pieces of lumber large enough to fit a piece of rebar through it (or some other tough metal spike). Drill 2 holes in the 36 inch piece and at least 3 holes in the 48 to 60 inch pieces. The stake should be roughly 1 foot away from the back of the pit and in the center of the sides. Now lay the lumber down in the correct positions (the open end should face the opposite stake) and drive the rebar through the lumber into the ground. The rebar should be at least 1 to 2 feet long. Now repeat these steps for the other stake.

You are doing great! You now have the stakes placed properly and securely in the ground with sturdy borders surrounding it on three sides. The next step is to dig up the first 2 to 4 inches of dirt. You now have to make a decision as to what type of pit materials you want to use. Popular choices are dirt, sand, and clay. If using dirt, make sure the soil is loose in the entire pit. If you are going to use sand or clay, then pour it in the pit. If you dig up 4 inches of dirt, pour about 2 to 3 inches of sand or clay in the pit.

Time for the finishing touches! Place two markers in front of each of the stakes. One marker should be 3 feet in front of the stake, the second should be 13 feet in front of the stake. Be sure to have the marker be about 3 feet wider than the pits on each side. If you have followed the measurements so far your pit should be 36 inches wide. The markers should be about 9 feet long. Or, you can just have 2 markers each three feet long and place then next to the horseshoe pits on both sides. These are the foul lines. Any child under the age of 18, women, and senior citizens can use the second foul line (13 feet in front of the stake). All other men must use the foul line that is 2 feet in front of the horseshoes stakes.

Now take a step back and look at your brand new horseshoe pits. Grab a few of your friends, your horseshoes, a few cold ones, and game on!

Basic Ping Pong Rules

The official rules of ping pong, also known as table tennis, are quite easy to learn, and it is a rewarding game for many people. A ping pong table has a short net across the center and white markings. The markings are only used when playing doubles ping pong, and can be disregarded for singles games. In a singles game, you may serve from anywhere on the table to anywhere on the table. In a doubles game, you must serve from your right to the opponent’s right side. The table must have an even surface, and the ping pong paddles should have a rubber surface. While sandpaper surfaced paddles are seen occasionally, these are prohibited by ping pong rules.

The game begins with the flip of a coin to determine which player serves first. The serve consists of tossing the ball into the air and hitting it onto the other side of the ping pong table with your paddle. It may hit the net, as long as it bounces onto the table; however, this is called a let serve and is reserved. If the ball leaves the table, the server will lose his or her point. The first player serves two points, and then it is traded off. The game is won with eleven points or by a two point differential thereafter. At 10 points, the two players alternate serving until one wins. Several games in a row will make a match, by winning say four out of seven games.

A ball in play in ping pong is called a volley. The ball may be volleyed back and forth many times without a point being lost or scored. If the server hits the ball twice in a row, misses the ball or hits it off the table, they will lose their point. If the player opposing misses the ball, the server gets the point. Points are accumulated as the players take turns serving the ball.

You may hit the ball with the paddle using either a forehand or backhand stroke. Players can use either hand to play or both hands at once. You may not bump or touch the table. If the ball hits a wall, the floor or ceiling, it is out of play and a point will be lost.

The rules of ping pong are easy to learn, and this fun game is a great activity to do with friends or family. It does not take a lot of space, can be done year round, and perhaps a ping pong table would be a good addition to your rec room or family spaces.

Nintendo Commercials

Nintendo has been a constant in the video game industry over the last 20 years, even though in recent years it hasn’t competed as strongly as it used to. Still, there are some beloved games attached to all forms of Nintendo consoles, and along with those brilliant games there have been some great Nintendo commercials. Nintendo was known for making some fun ads, and in some cases they’ve created a following of their own as legendary as the games they’re advertising. There are a lot of options online for finding these Nintendo commercials, so here are a few sources to start with.

The number one destination for Nintendo commercials is also the bastion for any other kind of old-school – or “new school” – videos, YouTube. Simply plugging in a search for “Nintendo commercials” will give you a boat load of results, and you’ll most likely be entertained for a few hours. There are ads on YouTube spanning from the original Nintendo to the new Wii, so try not to get too addicted while you’re at work.

Unfortunately, with all the different videos on YouTube, you can get side-tracked pretty easily. As an alternative you may want to check out PimpMyNintendo.com, which houses essentially everything retro. Just check out the section for commercials and you’ll be able to find some Nintendo ads quickly, starting in the 80’s. You have to dig a little deeper once you’re in the 90s, but Nintendo created some of the best and most popular video game commercials in those two decades, so you’re bound to find some very easily.

There is a lot of debate over what is considered Nintendo’s “best” commercial – there are so many of them – and many people claim that this one or that one is the best. It’s really a matter of personal taste, but some of the higher-rated Nintendo commercials feature cheesy acting while showcasing gameplay. The old ones are definitely a lot more entertaining than the current Wii commercials now.

The only downside most of these commercials share in common is the poor quality. While newer commercials – which aren’t as fun in spirit as the 80s and 90s – are often pristine, the Nintendo and Super Nintendo commercials are bad rips from VHS tapes. However if you can suffer through the quality issues then you’re in for hours of entertainment – great news if you’ve recently cancelled your cable to save money.

Quiz Night Novelty Games

There are some simple and fun games that you can add to your quiz or trivia night that are sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

Sure it’s fun answering questions about history, sports and music but by the forth or fifth round people will appreciate something different.

A great novelty game to play is the treasure hunt. The treasure hunt involves you awarding prizes to the first team that can make it to the scoring table with a collection of special items. For example you might announce that there will be ten bonus points offered to the first team to make it to the scoring table with three business cards, a safety pin, a red pen and a bandage.

This is a great novelty question for two reasons. Firstly is involves the teams communicating. Immediately everyone starts to look around their team and talking. “I have a pen and a business card, does anyone have a bandage on them?” Secondly the question means people get to leave their seat and run to the scoring table. Even the observers who remain seated vicariously enjoy seeing some physical activity.

Another fun novelty game you play is called the sit down stand up game. Have everyone in the room stand up. Then ask them a question with a yes or no answer. Did Roger Federer win this years US Open tennis? for example. Tell the audience that if they think the answer is yes they should put their hands on their head. If they think the answer is no they should put their hands on their waist.

Wait 5 seconds until everyone has picked an answer and then announce that the people who got it incorrect should sit down.Repeat the process with another question only allowing those standing to participate. Continue until you have whittled the audience down to a single person left standing. This person is the winner and their team receives bonus points.

Once again this game is a lot of fun because it gets people temporarily out of their seats and doing something physical.

A very simple but fun game you an incorporate in your quiz or trivia night is called the magic seat. Before the quiz has begun, in fact before the participants have arrived, stick a piece of paper containing the word winner to the under side of three chairs in the room.

Halfway through your quiz you can ask everyone to get up and check under their chair for the special magic paper. The lucky people sitting on a magic chair will all earn their teams an extra five points.

Obviously this game is simply luck based, but people do enjoy it.

You should definitely think about adding some novelty games to your trivia or quiz night. They can make all the difference.

Fred 28 – Fred’s New Year Table Tennis Video 2012 (Aged 8 3/4)

New Years Eve in Heckmondwike was so good that we slipped out for an hour to play table tennis. Here are some of the highlights. A couple of different angles this time and even a couple of regular into irregular exercises. He seems to be hitting the ball earlier, harder and spinnier, but you judge for yourselves. Not sure why a couple of clips have missing sound, but hopefully it doesn’t spoil things too much.

Holiday Games

The holidays are nearly upon us, and with that comes the gathering of friends and families to spend time together, share a meal, and maybe exchange some presents. When they’re not eating, finding ways to keep yourself, your friends, and your family entertained is key. So here are a few indoor and outdoor games to try during the holiday season.

Indoor Games

Not everyone will want to watch football while recovering from their food coma, and some engaging activities may actually help them recover quicker. Depending on how far ahead you plan, and the space you have available, there are a wide range of Indoor Games you can get for entertaining when it’s too cold and miserable to be outside.

With enough space, and plenty of planning ahead, a billiards table is a great way to keep yourself and your guests entertained, especially since it can support multiple players at one time. Air hockey and table tennis are much the same, requiring a little planning ahead and some space, but allowing for hours of enjoyment by numerous players.

If you don’t have an abundance of space, dart boards can still allow several players to enjoy themselves without requiring as much room as some of the table based games. You can also choose between sharp metal tipped darts and softer tipped darts for use on electronic dart boards if there will be younger players.

Outdoor Games

If you’re fortunate enough to have a warm holiday season where you live, you may want to take the entertainment outdoors. If football isn’t your idea of fun, or at least the tackling part isn’t, there are still plenty of outdoor games that you can play with a group.

Games like horseshoes, badminton, and bean bag toss require a minimum of setup, are easy to learn, and can be played by a group of players with ease. These games are favorites when the age range is wide since you can easily form teams with adults and younger players that will be fair for everybody involved.

Games like bocce ball, croquet, and bounce houses require a bit more setup and space to make use of, but can support even more players and entertain a group for hours. Bounce houses are perfect if you’re holiday planning will involve a large number of smaller children as they can have fun by themselves while the adults have fun doing something else.

Have Fun

Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, there are plenty of ways to have fun this holiday season. Talk with your friends and family to see what kinds of games sound like fun to them, and remember to take the weather into account when planning what type of entertainment to offer up.
